It was a lot of fun to share some of the techniques I use to color cloth. I generally don't have a preconceived plan. I just let the fabric evolve. Most of the time, it turns out well. Sometimes, it needs more layering. Occasionally, it turn out ugly and you just have to cut it into smaller pieces.<br />
<br />
I had a very interested crowd and they had great questions and suggestions. The two hours flew by and only one piece of fabric was fully developed. I let the fabrics batch for 24 hours, added more dye and batched for another 24 hours. I promised to post the before and after photos of the fabric, so here they are along with a brief description of what was used.<br />
<br />

After: I filled the white area with thick green dye.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Before: This started as a drop cloth. I used thick blue dye to screen-print a design made with blue tape stuck to the screen. It turned out pretty ugly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTU-8X7flUBGxCqJSvwVVQtp8wruqErA723YdGznfl9pbh_7OtcWmEIG2fd8uCwcSMub-c_dEcKB1SGIdBz6N9OQe5hAPn6LnRJAEqI4chM15arPCx_W1NDlWiz7HHV42XHEsY/s1600/ugly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTU-8X7flUBGxCqJSvwVVQtp8wruqErA723YdGznfl9pbh_7OtcWmEIG2fd8uCwcSMub-c_dEcKB1SGIdBz6N9OQe5hAPn6LnRJAEqI4chM15arPCx_W1NDlWiz7HHV42XHEsY/s320/ugly.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After: I added more thick gold dye. It's still ugly but I think there is still hope for it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpzcM5MHNTlIVubHKCPOim2sVXUjKnmVgLDUhWNkrcL9y0xHQXgp3vmOS6Ks_wnjYuwgI4Ucefgu2jaYmiv-64DM_CHKT81SGpnDH4m2w8oqQq38jjzONYLdKsPIT56XA26mcs/s1600/black+ovals.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="131" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpzcM5MHNTlIVubHKCPOim2sVXUjKnmVgLDUhWNkrcL9y0xHQXgp3vmOS6Ks_wnjYuwgI4Ucefgu2jaYmiv-64DM_CHKT81SGpnDH4m2w8oqQq38jjzONYLdKsPIT56XA26mcs/s320/black+ovals.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is the only piece that was completely finished in one pass. I used sponges to spread thin dye and thick black dye to stamp the ovals.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimKEtZUFQqYhZg4a-9zXQUDJsMvCWepmj04K31OcoWdsouaMQL4KK3mfJvnh8VS74IFKB8f8Xly1HhZYX9qmOEJsvN7Bh_xpqmFSeR195kNjrlKlsO0QpImh3HQngjgT6L-Zb8/s1600/spots.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="165" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimKEtZUFQqYhZg4a-9zXQUDJsMvCWepmj04K31OcoWdsouaMQL4KK3mfJvnh8VS74IFKB8f8Xly1HhZYX9qmOEJsvN7Bh_xpqmFSeR195kNjrlKlsO0QpImh3HQngjgT6L-Zb8/s320/spots.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Of course, I didn't get as much done as I hoped to, so more dyeing was done the next day at home. Thin dye was poured and blended onto white denim. This will become a shopping bag.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdZy97jHCQk5UuRTf_fEFTJ6V3YY5YwhJ7_dVnQ0vOf4YK_O3mXRxZcKwJ4F6wFwWfpMzqUTeTVJwqnPaMpSqg5hJyKxiR_oa8gb3doMHxhauNrtmzVhLBK_lWxtxXZyfuRVde/s1600/writing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="145" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdZy97jHCQk5UuRTf_fEFTJ6V3YY5YwhJ7_dVnQ0vOf4YK_O3mXRxZcKwJ4F6wFwWfpMzqUTeTVJwqnPaMpSqg5hJyKxiR_oa8gb3doMHxhauNrtmzVhLBK_lWxtxXZyfuRVde/s320/writing.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This piece was dyed at home. The writing was done on white denim with black dye in a squirt bottle. I splashed fuchsia dye on the background and sprayed with water to blur and blend everything. As it turns out, I like the back of the fabric better. I'm currently making a shopping bag with this fabric. I'll post it when it's finished.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This piece was dyed at home. Blue dye was poured onto the denim fabric. Thickened wasabi and purple dyes were spread around. This will become a shopping bag.</div>

There will be one more demonstration at the Elverhoj Museum on January 28th at 2:00 pm. This one will show you how to Make Stamps. Our exhibit will be hanging until February 5th.</div>

Years ago, I collected novelty yarns to use as
embellishments in my art quilts. That phase didn’t last long and I barely used
the yarn collection. My knitty friend suggested cutting it up and tying it back
together to form new art yarn. Wow, that sounded like an interesting idea. I sorted
through my bin for yarns that I thought might work together and chose fifteen different yarns. I cut and tied, knitted a sample, deleted several eyelash yarns, and
knitted another sample. After a few versions, I think I have a good assortment
that will make beautiful art yarn.<br />

Here's a wonderful Della Q circular needle case from Etsy.
I love the numbers on the needle slots and it has plenty of space for cables,
It also has a zippered pouch on the outside for markers, scissors, etc. <br />

<span style="font-size: 14pt;">We recently remodeled our
kitchen and dining room. Some people think that sounds like fun, but in
reality, it was a lot of stress and work. I wanted everything, but had to stay
within a budget and the two are often at odds. I have to say that we really did
a great job, we came in under budget (gasp) and the kitchen is both beautiful
and functional.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">While the remodel was
happening, my whole life revolved around it. There was a lot of creativity
involved but it was a very different type of creativity. When the remodel was
done, I didn’t know what to do with myself. I had a hard time getting back into
my normal creative activities. I was experiencing a major creative block. I tried not to
worry about it too much. I started dyeing and screen-printing fabric, yards and
yards of beautiful fabric! It worked, one thing led to another and the creative
block is a distant memory.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

As I was quilting this piece, it just really struck me how different the stitching made it look. I had to stop and take photos and want to share them with you. I have known this for a long time, but to look at the before and after, really proves it.<br />

I feel like I'm a pretty good quilter, but there is always room for improvement. Sandwiched between a trip to Las Vegas and Spain, I took a 5 day HQ quilting class at the <a href="http://www.thecreationstation.com/sitefiles/fabricstore/pages/fabric_main.html" target="_blank">Creation Station</a> with Pam Clarke and Megan Best. It covered a variety of skills ranging from traditional patterns to overall designs, many of which I never would have tried on my own. The scale of most designs were larger than what I was used to. Needless to say, I was definitely pushed out of my comfort zone. It was a good experience and a good confidence builder.Judy Ryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07811878186860224764noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26687666.post-287786157337546352014-10-06T10:45:00.000-07:002014-10-06T10:45:25.722-07:00Final Quilting DecisionI'm about to quilt the final section of the sky and I'm trying to decide what color of thread to use. Yesterday, I thought I was going to use ice blue thread, but today it isn't even a contender. Between the three colors shown, iris (darker purple), blue and amethyst (lighter purple), I'm leaning towards the iris. I think I'd like to darken up this area a bit and the purple would do that and add a little warmth. Which one do you like best?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAWxN6rudgIFxtk8ubsK0ILc3Cxq2GPbQJjjrkF2OMBF9fDchVsqNJfEOb-GC37nmAZqqdMJ8-701-WYxXfkXQYaemtoB-O0TZZvsy5pQWX4bhtcZiOle1M6ZPtnBwzFfEpDCy/s1600/IMG_7878.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAWxN6rudgIFxtk8ubsK0ILc3Cxq2GPbQJjjrkF2OMBF9fDchVsqNJfEOb-GC37nmAZqqdMJ8-701-WYxXfkXQYaemtoB-O0TZZvsy5pQWX4bhtcZiOle1M6ZPtnBwzFfEpDCy/s1600/IMG_7878.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I can't show you the whole quilt yet because it's going into an exhibit soon, but I bet you can guess what it is. Here's a close up of some of the quilting on my hand dyed fabric. Hope you can see it, the thread color blends pretty well.<br />

I've been using my homemade <a href="http://judyrys.blogspot.com/search?q=pinmoor" target="_blank">pinmoor holders</a> a lot and I absolutely love them. They stay in pretty well even through all the shifting, rolling and scrunching that you do while quilting, but they're easy to remove when you pull on the foam. I purchased extra pins and have about 120 now.</div>

It seems like I've been running from one thing to another with little time in between. Now that I've had a little time to catch up, I'll work backwards through some of my summer adventures.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
The most exciting part was a trip to Morocco and Spain! The whole trip began because my husband had to go to Marrakech for business; so we decided to make a vacation out of it. We spent a week in Marrakech at the <a href="http://www.palmeraiemarrakech.com/" target="_blank">Palmeraie Palace</a> and then went to Spain for two weeks. It was a fantastic vacation, much better than I ever imagined. The Palmeraie was a beautiful resort on the outskirts of Marrakech. They had everything you could want, great restaurants, spa, pool, shopping and golf. They took credit cards, the food was safe and delicious and they gave us bottled drinking water, remember this is Africa and we had to get Typhoid shots.<br />

The Old City is where you want to go for people watching and shopping (haggling) in the souks. If you don't haggle, you will end up paying way too much for everything! The souks (marketplace) isn't for the faint of heart, however, it's an experience than shouldn't be missed. Be prepared to get lost and be prepared to pay a guide to lead you out of the miles of maze like tunnels. At one point during a haggling session for a camel backpack, the Berber salesman stopped and asked me if I was part Berber. Apparently, that was a compliment because I ended up getting the backpack for the price I wanted.</div>

Changes are happening quickly and you can almost feel the growing pains. We discussed the construction of the New City with a local. He said that it didn't exist until 2000 and now they have high rise apartments and shopping centers. The cost of living has risen considerably and he was having a hard time making ends meet. Needless to say, he didn't like the changes but that's the way most people feel about change everywhere.</div>

My opinion: They could use some traffic lights and rules. Their controlled chaos way of driving leaves a lot to be desired.</div>

The ResultsThis shows most of the pieces I printed on my first day with my permanent gelatin plate. None of these pieces were plain white fabric when I started. All of them had some sort of surface design and I didn't like the way any of them looked. The gelatin printing has improved all of them.<br />

It seems like they get warm really fast and needed to be refrigerated often. I didn't even get the process fully figured out before the plate fell apart. I read about somebody (sorry, can't remember who) that used glycerin as a preservative in a gelatin plate and it worked well. The printing plate did not need refrigeration and it did not mold. I saved the information - just in case.<br />
<br />
Fast forward . . . Gelli Plates became popular and I became tempted to buy a large one, but then I remembered that I had a recipe for a permanent gelatin plate and I decide to give it a try. I ordered the glycerin from Amazon and searched for the perfect cookie pan. Once the glycerin arrived, it was really fast and easy to make.<br />
<br />
<u>Small Gelatin Plate Recipe:</u><br />
2 TBS Gelatin<br />
1/2 cup Glycerin<br />
1/2 cup Boiling Water<br />
<br />
<u>Large Gelatin Plate Recipe:</u><br />
12 TBS Gelatin<br />
3 cups Glycerin<br />
3 cups Boiling water<br />
<br />
1) Mix the gelatin into the glycerin<br />
2) Add the boiling water. Stir until dissolved<br />
3) Pour into the pan and level<br />
4) Let harden at room temperature<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVzv0XpVJyrdwO-zxcJB8-dBprXikuayl35BYj-tbz2aUJpOZQaCIfjTLZ56clvZS2zK-1FtAn8NogXR4PY4XWMxyJ6rfoK7xM7kmVgMVm9EQOhV__HMfd3LOQa8XGaqYroBZr/s1600/IMG_5964.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVzv0XpVJyrdwO-zxcJB8-dBprXikuayl35BYj-tbz2aUJpOZQaCIfjTLZ56clvZS2zK-1FtAn8NogXR4PY4XWMxyJ6rfoK7xM7kmVgMVm9EQOhV__HMfd3LOQa8XGaqYroBZr/s1600/IMG_5964.jpg" height="320" width="256" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Gelatin from grocery store and vegetable glycerin from Amazon</div>
<br /><u>Small Plate:</u> Use a shallow container. Once gelatin is set, flip it over and remove the gelatin. Keep it stored, upside down on the lid so it can be used easily.<br />
<br />
<u>Large Plate:</u> Use the Large Recipe or calculate how much gelatin your container needs to fill to the brim. I leave the gelatin in the pan even while printing. Make a cover for the pan to protect the gelatin. If the plate gets damaged, cut it up and put it in a microwavable container, melt it, then pour it back into the pan.<br />

DO NOT clean up in your sink or you will clog your pipes. Wipe up the gelatin with paper towels and throw away. Rinse with hot water outside.<br />

I've tested my plate already and it works great. Much better than the store bought purple plastic binder, don't you think?<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the back of the binder.</div>
<br />
I went around the outside edge with two rounds of satin stitch. The first time was the middle setting on my machine and the second time was the widest setting. It turned out slightly wonky which feels just right.Judy Ryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07811878186860224764noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26687666.post-4548828931195149462014-06-01T12:36:00.001-07:002014-06-01T12:36:27.427-07:00Thread Fabric for a Guest BookFibervision just switched its guest book to a 3-ring binder format and I decided to make a book cover to jazz it up. To make the fabric, I'm using all the bits and scraps that "normal" people throw away. It has the thread tails, thread snots as I like to call them (knotted threads from fabric ends after washing), bits of fabric scraps and left over yarn. I arrange the bits on a fabric background until I like the arrangement, cover it will Solvy and stitch like crazy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCGtKrWpXB8NGm0V2IDNd33Wld3ugQKtyNMpQvW8oSgTiqdOp8CkTgdzHoQysxUt73gV9zZhA0K8GvpibuFpKb3oJkchsV9q00y6Iig-T-2ZsMC_J3WnaDop606dUY8QlAiGVN/s1600/IMG_5958.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCGtKrWpXB8NGm0V2IDNd33Wld3ugQKtyNMpQvW8oSgTiqdOp8CkTgdzHoQysxUt73gV9zZhA0K8GvpibuFpKb3oJkchsV9q00y6Iig-T-2ZsMC_J3WnaDop606dUY8QlAiGVN/s1600/IMG_5958.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I've used this technique <a href="http://judyrys.blogspot.com/2010/12/im-so-lucky.html" target="_blank">before</a> but I've always mounted the finished pieces onto canvas or postcards. This will be the first time that I've created something functional with it. The fabric was wet and in the process of being blocked when I shot this photo. I underestimated how much shrinkage would occur and I have just enough fabric to cover the 3-ring binder.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1PvFuEvHgInOUvPD-an4UpXchGjKcglF5mjEO0aGqa06GPMVRkTDqfSGTDEPon-YiZvSHPFOMJFiHP8KpZpjng1AXogF5uIdpZ4zHIH8q8Wd2O0BJgoexWykiM_I-uQ07EedS/s1600/IMG_5959.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1PvFuEvHgInOUvPD-an4UpXchGjKcglF5mjEO0aGqa06GPMVRkTDqfSGTDEPon-YiZvSHPFOMJFiHP8KpZpjng1AXogF5uIdpZ4zHIH8q8Wd2O0BJgoexWykiM_I-uQ07EedS/s1600/IMG_5959.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I need to cut it to size and figure out a good way to secure all the loose threads. I think I'm going to go around with a couple rows of straight stitch, then do a wide satin stitch. Somehow, I'll have to attach pockets to each end too. Hopefully, it all works out because I don't have any time left for a redo.</div>

I'm finally happy with the results of painting experiment. I would do this again, but I would skip the pounding and go straight to the painting. I definitely prefer knowing that my fabric has paint on it. Just so you know, this method produces a fairly stiff fabric that feels a bit like paper, but you would still be able to stitch through it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Keep in mind that that the beauty of the iridescent paint is very difficult to capture.</div>

You can still see a hint of some of the underlying images but I covered them up pretty well. Right now they still have quite a few wrinkles. I'll let the paint set for a full two weeks, then give them a good steaming to remove the rest of the wrinkles. I'm planning to store these pieces rolled instead of folded.</div>

Here's a couple of close up shots of the quilting on one of my new pieces. It showcases the same "skylight" fabric that is used in the piece on the flyer above. Photos were manipulated, then printed on fabric. I also have a third design in progress that uses the same fabric.<br />

I used <a href="http://judyrys.blogspot.com/search?q=templates" target="_blank">plastic circle templates</a> to help me quilt five sets of gradated circles, then I stippled around the outside to flatten the background.<br />

Sometimes the best lessons are learned from your failures. This experiment is one of those lessons!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fabric 3</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1lHxHh7FWE18CMOZ1I8PGB5ynofTC2FSAg-oYH9UEiSlMg4c9jyQxy0Q01aRxjsU7-EGGNAxUxY7OYjYYZfVUu_kopc7lla0BlBJBdETiiqqCdhhdmcMhuCtjgrTJ21FOamiC/s1600/IMG_5806.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1lHxHh7FWE18CMOZ1I8PGB5ynofTC2FSAg-oYH9UEiSlMg4c9jyQxy0Q01aRxjsU7-EGGNAxUxY7OYjYYZfVUu_kopc7lla0BlBJBdETiiqqCdhhdmcMhuCtjgrTJ21FOamiC/s1600/IMG_5806.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a fat quarter that somebody else dyed as part of an exchange. Not my style.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Not much better after the Setacolor and Lumier layer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Front side. Another layer of Neopaque and Lumier. You can still see the stamped designs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Back side looks a lot better than the front.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fabric 4</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm responsible for this piece. It has layers of rubbings with paint sticks. It's pretty bad.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhih8ueiibhKj2yfRShyphenhyphenMV9D5rP1Bxtnl-mD62-cu-kzyv6G9PSveLY2rHXG0h_WyEB-JhbImJONoh0idGgJQt0ribA6R3HqYfQG7Jvl5THt6v8Qwlth8yCu3PVbGQ68a2FAQhF/s1600/IMG_5831.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhih8ueiibhKj2yfRShyphenhyphenMV9D5rP1Bxtnl-mD62-cu-kzyv6G9PSveLY2rHXG0h_WyEB-JhbImJONoh0idGgJQt0ribA6R3HqYfQG7Jvl5THt6v8Qwlth8yCu3PVbGQ68a2FAQhF/s1600/IMG_5831.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A layer of Setacolor and Lumier help, but it's still ugly.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_0KZddh9SHlvOrOAKAkZGCm23xhHGAJPqLdUqDAEvSlxlXfp1i8_WRoZUoC3SLcRUbUo6qeeMr3bUeRJ1sSOBsUUeqtZfhHxauMeh46CgbWzRk8XliPjEtpOJzI_n8Bdo71cf/s1600/IMG_5839.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_0KZddh9SHlvOrOAKAkZGCm23xhHGAJPqLdUqDAEvSlxlXfp1i8_WRoZUoC3SLcRUbUo6qeeMr3bUeRJ1sSOBsUUeqtZfhHxauMeh46CgbWzRk8XliPjEtpOJzI_n8Bdo71cf/s1600/IMG_5839.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Front side after another pounding with Neopaque and Lumier.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIa3jBAziaNXTsFkBMI_pPlgyoj6xPkZjI2b9fG6rHXVLdlTzWFTtUaShFRAJbY265Gw1H91j8QYWmNH1OiYv9rZzMSdTtKPVBowuqcrAphYAKFlinY78lo5KxFmrp3zbzWDgs/s1600/IMG_5840.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIa3jBAziaNXTsFkBMI_pPlgyoj6xPkZjI2b9fG6rHXVLdlTzWFTtUaShFRAJbY265Gw1H91j8QYWmNH1OiYv9rZzMSdTtKPVBowuqcrAphYAKFlinY78lo5KxFmrp3zbzWDgs/s1600/IMG_5840.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The back side of this piece is probably the most interesting of all.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I like the combination of Neopaque and Lumier paint, however, I don't like this pounding technique. If I were to do this again, I would paint the damp fabric, then scrunch it into a bag to dry. At least I would know beforehand that all the areas that needed paint received it.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm not quite ready to give up yet and will do one final coat to all the pieces using my technique. I want majority of the underlying designs to disappear. Before I do the final layer, I need to finish the quilting on a piece that will go on exhibit at the end of May. </div>

Of course, I didn't follow all of their directions. Silly me . . . will I ever learn? Probably not.<br />
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If I had started with a solid color of fabric like they suggested and didn't use transparent paint for the first layer, I would probably be done already. But no, I had to use some really UGLY fabric that I've been saving for some odd reason. Usually, layering makes the fabric more interesting. At this point, I'm not convinced that I should have wasted my time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There are a lot of step by step photos so I'll only show 2 pieces of fabric today.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fabric 1</div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTg0AUykWHcC-6TZGsNddC8E9phu4OnbakQq03ulCPeU1U_UspMeQGY7bo82ux7n2VvtBCYun5opScVL2hBiN2lAwsWfyOgKXHa0AwDfTbxwlTgfa_FCutF26NalewvFqj7dKQ/s1600/IMG_5805.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTg0AUykWHcC-6TZGsNddC8E9phu4OnbakQq03ulCPeU1U_UspMeQGY7bo82ux7n2VvtBCYun5opScVL2hBiN2lAwsWfyOgKXHa0AwDfTbxwlTgfa_FCutF26NalewvFqj7dKQ/s1600/IMG_5805.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hand dyed fat quarter. Not sure who made this, but it's not my style.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIuLu9oWxe8rtfGx3BWbAu-RBsnyA0vdt36JjT5zK_bRaF9fCpAIBo-CTjaAfQmH_ALFFtvaQl6-boLI9vPokeLlYmf3htdaPTZMCaJqp_UR7bwGMtLPb98Z4NkFVme82kUk7S/s1600/IMG_5832.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIuLu9oWxe8rtfGx3BWbAu-RBsnyA0vdt36JjT5zK_bRaF9fCpAIBo-CTjaAfQmH_ALFFtvaQl6-boLI9vPokeLlYmf3htdaPTZMCaJqp_UR7bwGMtLPb98Z4NkFVme82kUk7S/s1600/IMG_5832.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Squished fabric into a bag and added transparent Setacolor and Lumier paint. Still ugly</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Squished fabric into a bag and added Neopaque and Lumier paint.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still see the stamped design on the front side of fabric.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Back side of fabric . . . much better, but not great.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fabric 2</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All the steps are the same as Fabric 1.</div>

I like to dye outside on my patio. I get to play with color and enjoy nature. It doesn't get much better than that!<div>
<br /><div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I was pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy it was to pin the layers together.<br />
<br />
So now I pin basted a small and medium sized piece and will quilt them to see if the pins actually stay pinned for the duration of quilting. That seems like an important feature, don't you think?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have about 200 of the foam pieces cut, but only had 95 pins in my stash. If the pins hold well through the next test, I'll have to buy more pins. Even though the pile looks large, they are extremely lightweight, lighter than the safety pins I use now.Judy Ryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07811878186860224764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26687666.post-26712033869531049662014-04-25T18:25:00.000-07:002014-04-25T18:25:27.383-07:00Carpinteria Flower FarmsEach year, the flower farms in Carpinteria open their doors to the public for one day. The article in the newspaper made it sound worthwhile, so I grabbed my camera and headed south.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The exterior of the greenhouses were unimpressive . . . grey, cheap plastic.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSJ4ifGtt168os3S9fpy0YQ8k0OUo-nzVfgiGzwHkIzJxY1sMftmPrSKBaLJ-6Zhy3goZa8iFnfjzEu1pkH2wp_pUCE79P2R1xdSfDF2-ouaypaPhk0fbw5McviI9SkCYQy6Vl/s1600/IMG_5675.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSJ4ifGtt168os3S9fpy0YQ8k0OUo-nzVfgiGzwHkIzJxY1sMftmPrSKBaLJ-6Zhy3goZa8iFnfjzEu1pkH2wp_pUCE79P2R1xdSfDF2-ouaypaPhk0fbw5McviI9SkCYQy6Vl/s1600/IMG_5675.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It was a different story when they opened the doors though; it was beautiful, colorful and alive.<br />
<br />
We visited 4 different nurseries, two orchids, one rose and one gerber daisy. All of them are completely computer controlled. If it gets too hot, the roof opens, too cold and the heaters come on, sensors control the water and any excess that drips out get recycled. It's pretty amazing.<br />

Look close at the top of the photo. See all the hand cutters hanging from the overhead pipe. Apparently, orchids get a disease that spreads through infected hand cutters. They learned (the hard way) that it's cheaper to buy thousands of hand-cutters than to loose an entire nursery of orchids.Judy Ryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07811878186860224764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26687666.post-62391538601840274582014-04-23T09:22:00.000-07:002014-04-23T09:22:33.169-07:00Delicious Taco SlawLast night, I marinated chunks of Pork Loin in tequila, lime and plenty of spices. Today, I'll whip up a bowl of my delicious Taco Slaw while the pork cooks in my slow cooker.<br />

<br /></div>
Everyone loves this slaw and always asks me for the recipe, so I thought I would share it with you too. It's super easy to make and it's delicious on tacos.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Taco Slaw</u></b><br />
1 carrot, grated<br />
1/2 head chopped green cabbage OR 1 bag of cabbage from TJ's<br />
2 tablespoons minced garlic<br />
1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro leaves<br />
2-4 tablespoons chopped jalapeno, pickled okay<br />
1/2 teaspoon salt<br />
1/2 teaspoon pepper<br />
1/3 cup white vinegar<br />
Add everything into a large bowl. Toss to combine.<br />
<br />
Hope you enjoy it!Judy Ryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07811878186860224764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26687666.post-37293764032589378792014-04-21T15:02:00.000-07:002014-04-21T15:02:23.781-07:00Pinmoor Knock-off for LESSHave you seen the little rubber foam eraser shapes that are used with straight pins for pin basting? The product is called Pinmoor. I was intrigued because it looked really easy to remove the pins while you're quilting, but I wasn't prepared for the price. The average price (including tax and shipping) is $.43 per Pinmoor and they estimate that you need 100 Pinmoors to baste a baby quilt. Now that's pricey . . . and it doesn't include the flat flower pins either.<br />
<br />
I started rummaging around through my stuff looking for different foamy products that could be used as a backing for the pins. I tried some foam insulation and ear plugs but they were too squishy and Styrofoam deteriorated a little each time I poked a hole in it. Then I came across some foam that is used to make rubber stamps and I was pretty sure that it work, but I needed a thick piece. Unfortunately, all the pre-cut shapes at Michaels were thin, but then I found a 9 x 12" sheet that is 1/4" thick. I purchased one sheet for $.99 and headed home to experiment.<br />

It's really easy to cut through the foam with your rotary cutter. I cut a strip that was 1/2" wide, then cut 1/2" pieces from the strip. After cutting several of these. I found my flower head pins and stuck pins into the foam. Yay . . . it works great, but if you look really close to the picture above. The pin is almost inserted the full length of the 1/2" foam piece. I decided it would be a good idea to cut a few different sizes and try them out to see what I liked best.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can see two of the pins and foam above. The piece on the left is a 1" square piece of foam. I only did a couple this size and quickly decided that it blocks my view and I wouldn't like these all over my quilt.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a close-up showing you how I bent the flat flower pin to make it easier to get through your quilt layers. I haven't actually quilted with the pins yet (I just finished inventing this 10 minutes ago), but it looks like it's going to work just fine. So far, the size that I like the best is 1/2 x 5/8" because there's a little extra wiggle room in the length. I'll get at least 100 foam pieces from one 9 x 12 sheet. Not bad! </div>

Let me know if you use this pin basting system and like it!</div>

Isn't she sweet? It's a Giant Escape. The fact that it's called "Giant" cracks me up because it's a size Small, but yet it's a Giant.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIfvWu1N2a8a8FtSOV7FBHfpWHCvH-9EwHuIRdyO1AWDrGZy1R4YuQKcmaxwvYezZtb8KLHNcaK556dJvKpxlYDAPHY6gKESPeE2XRYa5gcQigOfqxO-dbGUTdXX_EA8BpxibI/s1600/bike.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIfvWu1N2a8a8FtSOV7FBHfpWHCvH-9EwHuIRdyO1AWDrGZy1R4YuQKcmaxwvYezZtb8KLHNcaK556dJvKpxlYDAPHY6gKESPeE2XRYa5gcQigOfqxO-dbGUTdXX_EA8BpxibI/s1600/bike.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
The gears on my old bike are tired. I have to say that it's much easier to ride a bike when the gears shift smoothly. I'm really enjoying the bike and have been riding it quite a bit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdDP-xgYhVY4jIjdJMAgab5pFLiSixo47PnA6nCI2w4EPK4ELSoFk-pfNXWUw1lwdTRX187crKzLKj74MpRx1eXkk2tTBrQLcg-jdUmfWYki2qaXnPX9MLlvNHI6Ulqli5PG9q/s1600/pant+strap+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdDP-xgYhVY4jIjdJMAgab5pFLiSixo47PnA6nCI2w4EPK4ELSoFk-pfNXWUw1lwdTRX187crKzLKj74MpRx1eXkk2tTBrQLcg-jdUmfWYki2qaXnPX9MLlvNHI6Ulqli5PG9q/s1600/pant+strap+1.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
I couldn't find my old set of pant wraps (for lack of a better name), so I made a new set from some ribbon and Velcro that I had in my stash.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You wrap them around your pants and secure the Velcro end. They save your pants from getting caught in the bike chain.</div>

Here are a couple of close-up photos of my second piece in the Looking Up series. It's pin basted and ready to be quilted on my Sweet Sixteen.<br />

She was a good instructor and everyone had a fun day using basic curved piecing techniques. I've done this type of piecing before so the technique wasn't new to me, however, she did have a couple of twists that did make her technique a little different. I generally don't use solid(ish) fabric and was feeling a bit resistant but I wanted to try something different, so I stuck to her rules for the most part. I used a lot of my own solid(ish) hand-dyes, some solid commercial fabrics and one wipe cloth fabric. I'm sure you can guess which fabric that is.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5Zj9QYLV35gXW4-FVlMR-PmQj9nyZsav6ZHgc4TQS-N6jHFaUNmmt29qKVe1aCGRyAS-HNAra4JKinqS9lmjQzweJ_WNCQuXG2LexflybWQwS3pmMliHra1AaXb4qhhgqZ_Ky/s1600/IMG_5542.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5Zj9QYLV35gXW4-FVlMR-PmQj9nyZsav6ZHgc4TQS-N6jHFaUNmmt29qKVe1aCGRyAS-HNAra4JKinqS9lmjQzweJ_WNCQuXG2LexflybWQwS3pmMliHra1AaXb4qhhgqZ_Ky/s1600/IMG_5542.jpg" height="320" width="313" /></a></div>
Here are the bits and pieces that I had finished by the end of the one day workshop. At this point, it would have been pretty easy to put them away like I usually do after a workshop and never finish the piece. For some reason, that didn't happen. I kept plugging away, adding pieces until they fit together in a way that felt balanced.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih0VvVxqz3lxGtAcc2FaKFbWbIaOWQ0KCH6fCx2Wr4fC06r0GcBSf0zNv7ViQzj3TCnn2VrqquNjVB7rhmTCR6AJznAGpioFNptqYh-_Imc0Wiw1iLnp9cZ1PRR2LgO4O9EmgM/s1600/IMG_5597.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih0VvVxqz3lxGtAcc2FaKFbWbIaOWQ0KCH6fCx2Wr4fC06r0GcBSf0zNv7ViQzj3TCnn2VrqquNjVB7rhmTCR6AJznAGpioFNptqYh-_Imc0Wiw1iLnp9cZ1PRR2LgO4O9EmgM/s1600/IMG_5597.jpg" height="288" width="320" /></a></div>
Here's the finished top. It measures approximately 40"w x 35"h. It's not square and it's not going to be. Now I need to figure out how to quilt it. One of my friends suggested quilting each different colored fabric with a different stitch and matching thread. That sounds extremely time consuming and I don't think I want to do that. I'm thinking something simple like vertical lines.<br />
<br />
What do you think? How would you quilt this?Judy Ryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07811878186860224764noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26687666.post-87895374234135164992014-04-01T14:40:00.000-07:002014-04-01T14:40:27.187-07:00Clearing the ClutterSpring always seems to make me want to organize my surroundings, but this year, I've gone way beyond my routine clutter busting. I actually tried on every article of clothing that I own and made an immediate decision as to what its future was going to be. Some of the skirts were too long, some clothing was too large (yes, you read that right), some made me look hideous. It felt great to finally go through all of it and clear out the clothes that I wasn't wearing. Here's the pile going to the thrift shop.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2XSoDyr-dfJTEAEFtdlCfs3l29GfztMow2XAcPvujkG4V9pq2PiAcGgKKvjwNxJ7S-MqG-PwuiE_l20TNR7VHvjbm6hop80-m_YB8YuSmDs1eEcz1VNZds_YHg0I_C-bdRCtH/s1600/clothes+donation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2XSoDyr-dfJTEAEFtdlCfs3l29GfztMow2XAcPvujkG4V9pq2PiAcGgKKvjwNxJ7S-MqG-PwuiE_l20TNR7VHvjbm6hop80-m_YB8YuSmDs1eEcz1VNZds_YHg0I_C-bdRCtH/s1600/clothes+donation.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My DH was very honest (not easy to do) and said that the long skirts made me look frumpy. I took a long, hard look in the mirror and agreed. I rolled up the skirts to evaluate whether they were worth shortening and decided that many were. Each was mid calf to floor length to begin with and I removed between 6-12" from each hemline. After hemming, I washed and twisted several of the skirts and left them to dry outside. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8kceIojpYg7cQugeBopmqSkhFzuoBPLGFCDBzXorXIGBI3-55F7I6-xw_SYAQcz5-ur7B15EsOCqg4eMwzJ2NOfJWBYH4cZA7ruNf83Ey3dwANm8QE3ief_mVBoB7NrbYSqho/s1600/skirts+drying.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8kceIojpYg7cQugeBopmqSkhFzuoBPLGFCDBzXorXIGBI3-55F7I6-xw_SYAQcz5-ur7B15EsOCqg4eMwzJ2NOfJWBYH4cZA7ruNf83Ey3dwANm8QE3ief_mVBoB7NrbYSqho/s1600/skirts+drying.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
The skirts turned out great and I'm glad I took the time to shorten them. Knee length turned out to be a flattering length for my height.<br />
<br />
The most complicated alteration was to this black jacket. I haven't sewn clothing in years but it looked like I should be able to adjust the shoulders fairly easy because it didn't have a lining. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJU8hI2cFaeEp10A_vDsU0qObpCDGAVq3YlmNy5l3N_tuNuUZ6hqZC-7ldHDvR8-YGbzDRMIftbQsP2SoW1Y7A47Ru_PPcb9lRMWCMBTleXlF48y9JwLQBnuvEkBiPMYa58wZY/s1600/jacket+alteration.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJU8hI2cFaeEp10A_vDsU0qObpCDGAVq3YlmNy5l3N_tuNuUZ6hqZC-7ldHDvR8-YGbzDRMIftbQsP2SoW1Y7A47Ru_PPcb9lRMWCMBTleXlF48y9JwLQBnuvEkBiPMYa58wZY/s1600/jacket+alteration.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
I called my friend and sewing teacher <a href="http://ranellhansen.com/home.html" target="_blank">Ranell</a> for a quick consultation and decided to give it a try. I removed the sleeves, marked the new seam line with a chalk pencil, cut the new shoulder line and resewed the sleeve back into the armhole. I removed about 3/8" from each shoulder and had no trouble fitting it back together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisdPx5AP6fC_FjzvL3qbZj977d-R_f4KHzhC6fvJXgHtoEM1pFr3ku_Nvv7BGuhmYX7SSX0hrqj6ARBoXk6wxyH0IIGQkKhm58Ir7xr9dGQRPLVZKQOHMmX-MiXfvUZ15DHUEI/s1600/jacket+alteration2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisdPx5AP6fC_FjzvL3qbZj977d-R_f4KHzhC6fvJXgHtoEM1pFr3ku_Nvv7BGuhmYX7SSX0hrqj6ARBoXk6wxyH0IIGQkKhm58Ir7xr9dGQRPLVZKQOHMmX-MiXfvUZ15DHUEI/s1600/jacket+alteration2.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>

Have I inspired you to clear the clutter from your closet?<br />

Using plastic templates are new to me, but I used masking tape and felt shapes as guides when I quilt on my Viking, so I decided to give the templates a try. I LOVE circles, so I bought the whole set and hoped for the best.<br />

I've taken some of the circles taken away so you can see how the increments break apart. I placed one template on the marked guideline, held on tight and stitched around it. Apparently, an easier way is to tape several rings together (say 5) with an X of blue painters tape, place on the fabric and stitch. I didn't find this out until after I did all this stitching! I have since tried the tape version and found that it is easier than trying to hold one of these skinny rings still. So, don't do what I did.<br />

Here's the result of my circle play time. It's not too bad as long as you don't look too close! I'm not used to quilting between the lines like this and adjusting the size of your pattern as you go around in a circle. It sort of reminds me of a spirograph . . . which I loved as a kid. I think these templates will help make my circles a lot more accurate.Judy Ryshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07811878186860224764noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26687666.post-44513289318075029762014-01-28T16:07:00.000-08:002014-01-28T16:07:13.198-08:00Road TripClick and hold . . . That's what happened many times on the bus ride home from the Road 2 CA Quilt Show. Once the sunset started, I pulled my camera out and the fun began. This is when my quilt show experience became very different from all the rest of the passengers on the bus.<br />
<br />
Each photo was considerably different than the one taken before. Some exposures were long and some were short. It just depended on how many lights were present in the background.<br />
<br />

If you look closely at this photo, you'll see vertical lines caused by the bus hitting pot holes during the exposure.<br />

The only lights available here were from the passing vehicles. If you look carefully, you can see the outline of several cars.<br />

Strip malls always have great lights. As Lora said, "In-N-Out Burger never looked so good."</div>

I took photos of the quilt show too, but those are for my own enjoyment. I've never been comfortable posting other people's quilts on my blog without their permission. I emailed photos to a couple of people that don't live nearby and they appreciated receiving them. We had a nice time, saw some great quilts and I took some great night shots too. </div>
